If you don’t know what that word means, now would be a good time to start watching the Game of Thrones series.
Everyone needs inspiration, a role model, or an inspiring figure, be it fictional or real. Khaleesi, the title of Daenerys Targyrean, a fictional character from the book series A Song of Ice and Fire and leading character in the TV series Game of Thrones, is an inspiring woman to me. Generally I prefer having fictional characters as role models, compared to public figures. The reason is probably similar to the existence of fiction in the first place; we crave someone else’s reality, in a fantasy space where anything is possible, where someone can accomplish the improbable, where a real person might not succeed.
Typical people I admire are Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, Mother of Dragons. (Yes I’m a huge GoT fan, in case you didn’t notice) 😉
Another fictional character: Lara Croft, Tomb Raider (an infinitely shorter title).
What both of these women have in common is their endurance. And that to me is the most inspiring characteristic that I need to see in a character. So often when life gets difficult, we want to give up, just “take to the bed” and crawl out after a week. But then these two phenomenal characters inspire me to press on, continue through the hardships and I will succeed. After all, after attempting to fight a small army of delusional Russians with only one pistol, or taming three dragons with only my wits, I think my issues seem a lot less complicated.
